In a tragic incident, Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Pramod Yadav was fatally shot by unidentified assailants in the Jaunpur district of Uttar Pradesh. The incident took place near Bodhpur village, falling under the Sikarara police station area, when Yadav was traveling in his car.

Superintendent of Police (City) Brijesh Kumar confirmed that Yadav, a prominent resident of Bodhapur and the Jaunpur district unit president of BJP Kisan Morcha, was ambushed by motorcycle riders who signaled to stop his car under the pretext of offering a 'card' and then fired four shots at him around 10 am.

Despite being rushed to the hospital, Yadav was declared brought dead by the attending medical professionals. The assailants fled the scene, leaving their motorcycle behind at some distance.

Jaunpur Superintendent of Police (SP) Ajaipal Sharma assured that several police teams have been deployed to track down and apprehend the assailants. Initial investigations have yielded significant clues, and the probe into Yadav's murder is actively underway.

In the political context, Yadav had contested from the Malhani seat for the BJP in the 2021 assembly polls, challenging Jagriti Singh, the ex-wife of former MP Dhananjay Singh. The timing of the incident is noteworthy as it comes shortly after Dhananjay Singh's sentencing to seven years of imprisonment in a 2020 kidnapping and extortion case.

Dhananjay Singh, now affiliated with the Janata Dal (United), was reportedly eyeing a candidacy in the upcoming Lok Sabha elections from Jaunpur. However, his recent conviction renders him ineligible to contest elections under the Representation of the People Act.

Additional Sessions Judge Sharad Kumar Tripathi handed down the verdict, finding Dhananjay Singh and his associate Santosh Vikram guilty in the kidnapping case of Namami Gange project manager Abhinav Singhal. Alongside the seven-year imprisonment, both Singh and Vikram were fined ₹75,000 each, as confirmed by District Government Counsel (Criminal) Satish Pandey.
